One who has experienced anxiety would wish they hadn’t. For a reason. And whoever hasn’t, is happy and lets it remain that way… Anxiety so overwhelms you and acts as if it came suddenly (and it didn’t), that you can’t understand what happened to you. My episode happened ten years ago, it never happened again, but I never forgot it. What helped me in these difficult moments, I will bring to you in this text. For months I have been researching and reading about anxiety, and especially how to treat anxiety naturally. How To Treat Anxiety Naturally (All About Anxiety)
Anxiety Seeks a Reaction, So React!
Later, I realized that it was necessary to react long ago, when the first symptoms started, and I was comforted by thinking it was normal and it would go away soon. In many ways, I lied to myself and at one point I felt like a stranger in my own body. Poor marriage, a stressful job, a bad financial situation, it all caused the problem to take root in the depths of my being.
The symptoms were there, and I was waiting for them to pass. For too long. Until it shook me and threatened my foundations… It’s been a while … Today, a bad marriage and stressful work are behind me. Many other difficulties came, but I was prepared for them. I learned a lot, but first and foremost, I listen to my body and responded to the signals it sent me. Nothing goes by itself, this should always be kept in mind. So react, change everything that disturbs your life and what you can and must change. And learn how to treat anxiety the natural way.
It is no shame to seek professional help and support as well. On the contrary, it is a sign of maturity and responsibility towards oneself, but also to the people around them. Also, watch who you hang out with, who you listen to, watch, take care of what literature you read… everything is important. I’m not glad this happened, on the contrary, but I often wonder how many things I would have changed in my life if it had been different. But this way, everything took too much time and effort. Even when things have changed for the better in my life, it took me time and time to realize that nothing was the same anymore…
Anxiety Is The Organism’s “Alarm Response” To Danger
Tension and mental pain are normal reactions of the body to a particularly difficult situation, but also this feeling should disappear as soon as the problem is resolved. If the organism feels physically or mentally threatened, anxiety is an alarming reaction. Acute anxiety can occur if we expect an important event, such as a public appearance, an exam, or a job interview. But this situation is usually short-lived.
However, for some people, anxiety turns into an almost permanent condition that interferes with their ability to cope with everyday life. Sometimes it’s because of a series of unpleasant conditions and situations, a difficult life, a series of unsolvable problems, frequent stressful situations. Some people are especially sensitive and often feel anxiety about much more harmless things. It is already chronic anxiety.
What Are The Symptoms Of Anxiety?
A vague or moderate hunch is one of the symptoms of acute anxiety and exactly what I clearly remember. The same as other symptoms it may be accompanied by abdominal cramps, dry mouth, palpitations, sweating, diarrhea. In chronic anxiety, uneasiness can occur even if you don’t know the reason at some point. The organism seems to get used to this unnatural state and it’s there even though we do not want it. One of the symptoms is a panic attack, which sometimes occurs without a hint, out of the blue.
Very often there are symptoms of suffocation, chest pain, shivering, malaise, piercing in the hands and feet, horror. They are sometimes so distinct that when viewed by someone else, it seems as if the person is experiencing a heart attack.
I’m glad these last few symptoms have passed me by. But I also remember one panic attack as faithfully as it has happened yesterday. I got up from my seat on the bus, quickly headed for the door, and I remember wanting to ask the driver to stop and open the door so I could get out. But to my luck, the station was few feet away and I almost ran out of the bus and continued walking as fast as if someone was chasing me. But it was this rush that seemed to be my salvation.
Whatever anxiety may be, its symptoms cause mental pain and disability, almost powerlessness. If they persist, our mental and physical health can be seriously affected. Each of us must find a way to resolve the root causes. It is very important to seek the professional help and support of a therapist or a support group.
How To Prevent Anxiety?
It is known that in all stress states our body consumes nutrients from the body much faster than in regular states. So we must make up for them. Because if we don’t, the nervous system slowly weakens, leading to an anxiety state. It’s important to eat healthy – foods rich in complex carbohydrates such as integral bread and brown rice can have a soothing effect on us. We should also include essential fatty acids (for example whole grains, bony fruits, seeds, and vegetables), vitamins (especially the B complex) and minerals as nutritional support for our nervous system.
It is good to eat smaller amounts of food frequently throughout the day to maintain a constant blood sugar level. It is also necessary to strike a balance between rest, exercise and relaxation during the day. This well-being improves the situation, and physical fitness will inevitably affect our attitude to life. So diet is one of the answers to the question of how to treat anxiety naturally.
How To Treat Anxiety Naturally?
In any case, it’s easier to deal with anxiety if we have the opportunity to get expert advice. But, also there are many things that we can do on our own. Self-understanding is just one way to treat anxiety naturally.
Many experts believe that some people are more susceptible to fear and restlessness than others. It is also possible that something in our past served as a trigger for, particularly severe anxiety. As a first step in overcoming anxiety, it is best to think about the events of the past and the most likely initial cause.
For example, parental warnings about some of the risks and dangers inherent in normal life. This may be the way our parents conveyed our fears. It can also be some traumatic experience that underlies anxiety. And it can also be a highly developed imagination, imagining all possible and impossible scenarios of certain events or actions.
If one is suffering from a phobia, such as the fear of flying, it’s a good idea to try and shift the fear to that particular one, but that fear is not much easier to deal with. In self-understanding and finding the root of your anxiety, a friends understanding can also be helpful.
Relaxation As An Important Factor In The Treatment Of Anxiety
Nature and evolution have programmed the human body to respond to dangerous situations by reflexive physical changes that prepare the body for “fight or flight”. Unfortunately, the willingness to fight or flee is not helpful in many situations that plague us today, so we often remain in a state of heightened tension without physical vent. This is where physical and mental relaxation comes in handy, which we can practice daily. This type of relaxation helps us cope with difficult situations from the start, rather than remaining alert.
There are several ways to treat anxiety naturally. Doing physical exercises or other physical activities that can diffuse the tension of our muscles and nerves is one way. We can join a relaxation or meditation group or use some audio or video for learning relaxation techniques. Twice a day or whenever we feel anxious, we can apply progressive muscle relaxation or try yoga exercises.
Affirmations As Another Answer On How To Treat Anxiety Naturally
Affirmations are something like a programmer of our thoughts, they help us to focus on them, and to choose what we think. That is why their help is great, in terms of turning to a positive attitude towards yourself, your personality and events. They also help us to neglect our negative views. The best thing to do is, knowing what is bothering us and according to our situation, come up with sentences that we will repeat out loud (even if we look funny to ourselves). We can even write them down a few times.
This type of mental exercise is part of congestive therapy, which aims to change our natural or instinctive reactions but not also understand their causes. For example, positive thinking about other people and their behavior. Once we get the right idea about this exercise, we can practice it in many situations and for many people. What we will learn is to recognize the negative reactions reflexively and instead of keeping those, accept more positive ones – more constructive, more positive, more realistic.
Nutrition Is Very Important
Anxiety and appetite are very often closely linked. While someone who is in an anxious state cannot eat, someone overeats. It’s important (no matter how difficult) to try to keep your eating in moderation.
Choose foods rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, calcium, and magnesium (a lot of this was mentioned earlier in the section on anxiety prevention), as a deficiency of these nutrients exacerbates or contributes to anxiety. Sugar is discarded immediately, white flour is minimized, as is alcohol and caffeine. Drink spring water, natural fruit juices, and herbal teas.
Talking About Teas And Medical Herbs …
Teas and herbs are one way to treat anxiety naturally. For two to three weeks, drink three cups of mulberry tea, oats or ginseng each day. These herbs help the nervous system to recover. Ginseng is said to be a magic plant, which I could absolutely agree with.
To reduce tension during the day and improve sleep at night, drink chamomile, linden flower, Valerian, hops or passionflower; You could also take pills or tinctures from these herbs. It’s important to know that even with herbs it’s not necessary to overdo it, it’s best to follow the instructions, especially when it comes to children. Let three cups be a daily measure.
Aromatherapy To Help With Anxiety
If you feel severe physical tension, it’s a good idea to massage your shoulders and neck with essential oils or add essential oils to the bath or spray. How to prepare massage oil, for example, almond or olive? Simply add two drops of geranium, lavender, sandalwood oil and one drop of basil oil. During the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, omit basil oil.
Here’s another combination – add a few drops of geranium or lavender oil to a bath or a bowl of very warm water, then inhale fragrant steam for 5 minutes. This quickly relieves the tension…
Floral Essences Help With Anxiety
Floral essences also dispel negative emotions, and some of them cure anxiety. You can use them individually or in combination, depending on the difficulty. Against general anxiety, take jasmine, cherry, larch, Mimulus, white or red chestnut or sun rose four times a day.
For panic attacks, take the so called “Rescue remedy” medication every few minutes, until you feel improvement. “Rescue remedy” is the most famous floral essence of dr. Edward Bach, who first started making flower essences back in the 1930s. This essence is a blend of 5 different essences, which help people in different crises and emergencies. Drop four drops of this essence into a glass of water or right onto your tongue.
However, they are prepared in water and stored in alcohol, so if the alcohol is a problem, make your own with glycerin instead of alcohol. Herbal essences have another advantage, they are harmless, even for children and pregnant women. Essences do not affect the effects of other medicines if used, so they are a good answer to the question of how to treat anxiety naturally.
Homeopathy And Anxiety
Here are some useful homeopathic remedies, especially for short-term crises, and they work well in combination with other therapies:
Aconitum: In the case of trauma-induced anxiety.
Arsenicum: In case of the constant need for calm.
Gelsemium: In the case of weakness, fatigue and fear, on the eve of an important event.
Phosphorus: In case of being upset and hypersensitivity to noise.
Other Anxiety Therapies
You can also treat anxiety related symptoms with therapies such as cranial osteopathy and psychotherapy.
When You Should Seek Medical Assistance?
Severe anxiety or panic attacks occur. Depression. You suffer from insomnia or dizziness. Or the symptoms I mentioned earlier in the text.
Tension Relaxation Massage
Put your palm on the opposite side of the collarbone and massage your shoulder muscles and the back of your neck with your fingers.
Hyperventilation (Rapid Breathing)
When you feel anxious, and especially when you are in a state of panic, your breathing becomes rapid and shallow. This disrupts the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the body. To calm your breathing like this, sit with one hand on the top of your stomach, then slowly inhale and exhale so that your hand moves each time you exhale. This “abdominal breathing” helps to slow down and deepen your breathing.
Yoga Breathing Is Also Calming
It’s a great therapy for people who often have anxiety because it relaxes both mind and body. Yoga also encourages calm breathing and overcomes negative emotions. The breathing exercise I bring to you strengthens and relaxes the pectoral and abdominal muscles, as well as to balance the flow of vital energy (prana). In each phase inhale and exhale 5 times.
I don’t normally practice yoga, but I do these exercises daily:
- Kneel while holding one hand on the stomach and the other on the thigh. Watch as your stomach expands as you inhale, and shrinks as you slowly exhale.
- Lay your palms on either side of your chest. When inhaling and exhaling, raise and lower your chest, and when you exhale, press your palms inward to expel as much air as possible.
- Pull in your stomach. When inhaling, lift your shoulders and upper chest, then drop them abruptly and relax your abdominal muscles as you exhale.
Acupressure Another Method On How To Treat Anxiety Naturally
Pressing the thumb on the point on the back of the hand, where the root of the thumb and forefinger come together, can bring relaxation and calm. Pressing this point stimulates the secretion of endorphins, a hormone that contributes to a pleasant feeling. Repeat pressing three times for 10-15 seconds. Do not use this item during pregnancy.
Foods That Are Calming
The amino acid tryptophan has a calming effect on the brain. The reason is that tryptophan in the brain is converted to serotonin, a soothing chemical compound. Most protein-rich foods contain tryptophan. The absorption of this substance improves if taken together with carbohydrates. Good sources of tryptophan are biscuit milk, turkey sandwich, and cheese, etc…
Did you know?
Anxiety can be the basis of an obsessive-compulsive disorder in which a person feels the need to constantly repeat an action. This can be hand washing, checking that the house is locked, lights off, repetition of certain actions, thoughts… If such behavior interferes with a normal life, you should seek help from a specialist.
What To Do When Anxiety Passes?
It’s good to forget the anxiety in terms of the annoyance we felt while it lasted. But it’s not good to forget it in the sense of ignoring the symptoms if they come back. Then we could run the risk of repeating our past and making the treatment of anxiety longer and more painful…
