Headache Is Not A Disease, It’s A Symptom

Headache is a common occurrence in modern society. I know people who swallow so many painkillers every day, and I’m sorry for them. It’s rarely a sign of serious illness and most often occurs due to increased stress. Pain is created by stiff fibers of tight muscles that pressure the nerves or interfere with the circulation of blood, lymph, tissue fluid or energy. Headaches range from those mild, brief discomforts, to severe pain that prevents us from functioning. Different parts of the head, from behind the eyes, temples, forehead, nape, or whole head, can be in pain.

Sometimes the so-called tension headache occurs, when we can feel the muscular fibers of our head, neck, and face tense. This headache is mainly caused by stress and tension. The worst possible type of headache is a migraine, a severe recurrent headache, and often accompanied by other symptoms. It’s good to keep in mind that headache is not a disease, it’s a symptom that occurs for many reasons and most often passes quickly. If not, then you should seek professional help. Almost everyone gets a headache sometimes, but with age, headaches are less common.

Causes Of Headache

Most often it is stress or lack of fluid in the body that cause headaches. Many don’t know that thirst is already a sign that we are dehydrated. A very common cause of headaches is the lack of nutrients in the muscles, blood vessels, nerves. If we have the flu or have a common cold, a headache often occurs as a symptom.

Sinus inflammation, too much alcohol, coffee, tobacco, smoky rooms, low lights, eye straining… If we take some medications that don’t suit us, or if women have PMS, or some other hormonal changes, jaw joint syndrome, toothache. Also, a headache can occur with food allergies, blood vessels collecting and widening, osteoarthritis. In rare cases, headache is caused by brain cancer, meningitis, high blood pressure or stroke. Let’s not forget that both lack of sleep and uncomfortable sleep can cause headaches.

It’s best to take plenty of fluids, first of all, water and herbal teas or tinctures (5 drops in a small amount of water) during or after a meal – not more than 3 times a day. The best teas are passiflora, rosemary or Stachys (a plant that clears our mind and cures many diseases), and you can also mix a combination of herbs in your tea. To relax tense muscles, it’s advisable to drink a cup of tea or take a tincture of valeriana with honey and rosemary. If you feel stressed, then add chamomile, wild oats or dried sass.

Hydrotherapy is another good way on how to get rid of a headache naturally. It’s good to put alternately warm and cool linings on the back of the door. Here’s an example: fold a small towel 2-3 times, soak it in boiling water and squeeze, then let it stand on your neck for 2 minutes. After that, the same is done with a cold towel, except that you hold it for only 1 minute.

Aromatherapy can also be a great natural help. Scented essential oils can relieve pain and tension, but also eliminate nasal congestion. They can also be added to bathwater, hot water for inhalation or massage oil. For tension headaches, try lavender oil, chamomile, sweet marjoram, as these oils are great for relaxing. If the headache is due to nasal or sinus congestion, colds or allergies, it’s a good idea to try Eucalyptus or mint oil.

Examples:

  • Spray a tissue paper with two drops of sweet marjoram oil, lavender, and mint. Take a deep breath three times.
  • Grease two drops of lavender oil on the temples, and behind the ears.

Homeopathy is another way on how to get rid of a headache naturally. If a pulsating headache occurs, exacerbated by light and noise, Belladonna is ideal. With a headache that occurs suddenly and worsens even on the move, it’s a good idea to try Bryonia. And with headaches caused by severe emotional states, Ignatia is great.

How Else To Get Rid Of A Headache Naturally?

There are great techniques for combating headaches. Cranial osteopathy, biofeedback, auto-hypnosis, meditation, yoga, reflexology, meditation, and acupuncture.

Acupressure is also good. Place one hand on the front of the partner’s head, and with the thumb of the other hand, press the point next to the bulging of the bone under the edge of the hair behind the ear. Direct the gentle pulsing pressure of the thumb towards the eye for 2 minutes.

Massage is great in combating headaches. Smoothing, blending or pressing the tense muscles of the shoulder, neck, face, and scalp is one of the best ways to relieve tension-induced headaches. Ask someone close to try one of the following massages, while you lie down.

  • Forehead massage – Kneel with the head of a person with a headache and place their thumbs in the middle of the forehead, just above the eyebrows, and place your fingers on either side of the head. Then, pull your thumbs toward your temples and lift them when you reach your hair. Repeat the movement, starting each time a little more on the forehead until you massage your entire forehead.
  • Temple massage – Put your fingertips on your temples and press firmly with your fingertips for 10 seconds. After that, gradually release the pressure and make slow circular motions with your fingers on your temples.

What To Eat When You Have A Headache?

When a headache occurs, much attention should be paid to nutrition. It’s best to eat foods rich in calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids. The grocery list is long:

  • Calcium – milk and cheese, fish, fish bones, whole grains, legumes, bony fruits, kale.
  • Magnesium – again – fish, whole grains, bony fruits, and also green leafy vegetables, shells, algae, mushrooms, meat, seeds, cocoa.
  • Essential fatty acids – again integral cereals, legumes, bony fruits, seeds, as well as cold squeezed vegetable oil, dark green leafy vegetables.

For headaches, it’s best to bypass those foods that we are hypersensitive to, no matter how much we love them. Some people get nitrite and nitrate headache (smoke-dried meat), glutamate monosodium, tyramine (fermented foods, some red wines, meat products, ripe cheeses, beer). Headache can also occur from sulfite (dried fruits and compotes) or salicylate (tea, vinegar, many types of fruit). If you are consuming a lot of coffee, it’s best to minimize it or switch to decaffeinated coffee.

How Can We Prevent Headache?

A healthy diet reduces susceptibility to headaches because it increases resistance to infections, improves muscle, nerve, and blood vessels. It also prevents food hypersensitivity. Fluid intake is of great importance. We should drink at least 6 glasses of water each day to prevent dehydration. What’s not easy for any of us, but is necessary, is to try to respond to stress as best and as calmly as we can. This can greatly assist us in: relaxation, controlling ourselves, organizing time, helping and supporting our beloved ones and talking to them.

What certainly prevents headache is the avoidance of tobacco smoke, a damp room to stay in, favorable lighting. Some people are also helped by the ionizer. Also, avoid alcohol, get enough sleep, get yourself a comfortable bed and pillow, go outdoors, breathe in the fresh air …

When To Seek Help?

If unexplained (without a particular reason) headaches recur, it’s best to seek medical help. Also, if you have a sudden, very severe headache that you have never experienced before, contact your doctor immediately. If vomiting, fever, rash, light sensitivity, confusion, vision problems or stiff neck occur with headache, then seek professional help.

Interesting

  • Almonds can help with headaches because they contain pain-relieving substances.
  • Stachys is a very important medicinal herb that works great for headaches caused by the narrowing and widening of blood vessels (vascular headaches).
  • Vinegar and paper liners may help with the headache. The vinegar is astringent and has a cooling effect and the paper absorbs well, so it can be used as a liner.
